Sleep Diet: Does It Help You Lose Weight?

Jennifer Lopez has been one of the big celebrities promoting a “new” diet called “sleep diet” that is apparently the way that she lost a lot of weight after having a baby.

What is the Sleep Diet?

In its basic form, the sleep diet requires that dieters on this diet should, get this, sleep for the amount of time that best suits their body. If you are having a “no duh” moment here, you aren’t alone. Research has shown that getting a good night’s sleep every night, and on a regular schedule, keeps your body healthy.

The specific “diet,” called the sleep diet, suggests that people should sleep upwards of 10 hours a night, as Jennifer Lopez claims to do for her beauty and her weight loss goals. The average person should sleep 6-9 hours a night depending on their body. The sleep diet suggests that people should try it out and figure out what amount of hours works for them.

Lopez also claims that she doesn’t eat anything after 5 p.m., but most nutritionists will tell you that eating small portions throughout the day can be a great way to stave off hunger and keep you from destroying your diet plans. She must wake up with quite an appetite.

Is the Sleep Diet Better than Other Diets?

Most diets revolve around a mix of eating healthy (or eating less) and exercising. And that is still the best method of dieting out there. Companies are quick to sell you the next weight loss pill, juice, or gimmick. In reality, exercise and decent eating habits are all you need to lose weight.

Personally, as a mid 20s male, I find the most success in doing cardio about 3 days a week and lifting 1-2 days a week. I don’t really follow a diet in terms of what I eat and drink, but rather common sense. I know that if I eat a big fast food meal for lunch today, then tonight I’ll consume something healthier. I try to balance my eating habits based on common sense and variety. I also firmly believe that more movement throughout the day keeps you in shape; skip elevators, get up and move around, get off a stop earlier, and so forth.

So will the sleep diet help you drop excess weight?

By itself, the sleep diet won’t do anything for you. With a decent diet and some exercise, a good night’s sleep will help you lead a healthier and more active life.
